Rewiring tumor cell metabolism to improve cancer treatment

Metabolic reprogramming of tumor cells is a novel concept to increase the efficacy of radiation- and immune-combination therapies. Tumor hypoxia strongly affects the efficacy of both these treatments, as well as their combination. Promising preclinical improvements in treatment outcome have been observed by the hypoxia reducing effect of mitochondrial (OXPHOS) inhibitors, and several compounds are currently in clinical trials for their anticancer properties. Jan Bussink’s research interest is to understand the effect of mitochondrial inhibitors on the tumor microenvironment and treatment efficacy, and he will present an overview of the field in light of his work.
